A case of puppy love for Ballarat

A case of puppy love for Ballarat

21/08/2008 1:12:00 AM
BALLARAT'S RSPCA was inundated with calls yesterday from residents wanting to give four rescued puppies a second chance.

After featuring in The Courier yesterday, the four Jack Russell cross pups found dumped at Sebastopol's HR Power Park on Monday night have won Ballarat's hearts.

RSPCA Victoria animal shelter manager Andrew Foran said there had been a lot of calls, with people expressing their concern and disgust over the incident.

"A lot of people would really love to give them a second opportunity, and we're really thankful," Mr Foran said.

"The RSPCA needs community support to get behind things like this."

But it may be some time before the puppies will be available for adoption, with the RSPCA launching an investigation into the incident.

Mr Foran said it was following some leads. Those responsible could be charged with abandoning an animal, which carries a maximum penalty of $12,000 and 12 months' jail.

"We're really confident that in time they will be available for adoption, and we will be notifying the public."

The RSPCA will feature an update on the puppies on its Ballarat website, on how the process is going, at www.rspcavic.org

The sad reality of this situation is nobody will be prosecuted and if they are it will be slap on the wrist. For years now animal welfare and cruelty issues in Ballarat have become more common it's disapointing to all Ballarat residents that when animal welfare agencies cach up with these criminals that the public justice system namely, judges and prosecutors let us down with their lousy excuse for sentencing. About time some of these people had some compassion for animals and did something to back it up rather that making pointless comments during sentencing that simply do not reflect the sentence given. I'm willing to bet when the offenders are court there will be no jail time involved there never is! It will not be on their permanant record, they will still be able to own and purchase future pets and they will be lucky to recive a $500 fine. What is the point of having animal wealfare services in Ballarat if they are having no affect on the overall situation? I think anybody that surrenders/ abandons an animal has admitted the are not physically capable of taking care of an animal and so should lose the right to ever own an animal in future. I'd also like to see the police and RSPCA insisting the dog these puppies came from is desexed or also surrendured this is the disgusting affect of backyard breedng without licencing, people breeding animals they can't take care of and as a result dumping the or doing worse and disposing of the animal themselves. It's time for the residents of Ballarat to start pushing council and local law enforcement to make changes and I would sincerely like to see the person /people resonsible for this made an example of.

There are unscrupulous vets out there that do not support the mandatory desexing of dogs and cats! Of course, self interests are their main concern! Puppy farms and excess animals means more jobs for them, and more are disposed of ("put to sleep") because they are unwanted. There could be some place for breeding mixed breeds, but the random breeding in back yards to sell in markets and on the Internet should stop! Pet shops should not be selling puppies or kittens as commercial commodities. Buyers should make a deliberate decision by visiting the breeders and seeing the parents and get expert advice. Pet shops should help shelters, not add to the misery of the flood of unwanted cats and dogs.

3:26 PM AEDT | THE real stars of the Great Victorian Bike Ride are the old folks, the people aged 70-plus. The ride is full of them, nuggetty men and women quietly peddling into the wind and occasional rain, ploughing slowly up hills, seemingly unstoppable, giving hope to us all.
