Ballarat's water storage level returns to double figures

21/08/2008 12:52:00 AM
AFTER good rain in Ballarat's catchment areas over the past week, the city's water storage level has pushed through the 10 per cent mark.

Central Highlands Water's weekly storage figures released on Tuesday show Ballarat's water supply system is slowly rising, sitting at 10.1 per cent with 6613ML.

This is a one per cent jump on last week.

The last time Ballarat's storage level was reported at double figures was on February 19 this year.

But despite the increase, the authority said no recommendation would be made to ease water restrictions from Stage 4 before its October board meeting.

CHW spokeswoman Nicky McMaster said the authority was continually monitoring the water levels.

"Rainfall over the next eight to 10 weeks is critical to increasing local storages to a point where a review could be considered," she said.

Although storages are at 10.1 per cent, they are still lower than at the same time last year, when they were sitting at 11.3 per cent.

Last week, Ballarat received 30mm of rain, making a total of 55.2mm of rain so far this month.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, the city is on par to receive August's average rainfall of 74.6mm.

A cold front across Victoria today is forecast to bring showers, hail and thunder, and possibly up to 10mm of rain.

The rain, along with the Goldfields Superpipe, which is helping lift storages with water from Lake Eppalock, will contribute to more increases.

Ms McMaster thanked the community for saving water.

"It is these savings, along with rainfall and water from the Goldfields Superpipe, that are contributing to the recovery of our storages," she said.

Ballarat water board cannot even think about making any changes in water restrictions. We are surviving quite well on current restrictions. If we want to have better levels in our catchments, leave restrictions where they are and give our reservoirs some time to recover without reintroducing stress again.

3:26 PM AEDT | THE real stars of the Great Victorian Bike Ride are the old folks, the people aged 70-plus. The ride is full of them, nuggetty men and women quietly peddling into the wind and occasional rain, ploughing slowly up hills, seemingly unstoppable, giving hope to us all.
