Priest 'threatens' Ballarat's Anglican bishop

21/06/2008 1:22:00 AM
THE Ballarat Anglican bishop has defended himself in a passionate letter against what he described as "outrageous action" by a priest whom he has declined to name.

Yesterday The Courier received a copy of the letter Bishop Michael Hough circulated among the Ballarat Diocese priests.

Bishop Hough is now overseas on study leave and to attend the once-a-decade Lambeth Conference, a gathering of Anglican bishops from around the world where issues affecting the church are discussed.

In the letter dated June 17, Bishop Hough says he was "threatened" 24-hours before his departure not to return to the diocese.

He said the threat came from a priest claiming to represent the clergy and laity of the diocese.

"On their behalf (though no names were divulged) he threatened me by demanding that while I was in England for the Lambeth Conference, I was to find a job over there and not return to the Diocese (his exact words).

"That priest said that his group believed that I did not have the confidence of the clergy and laity of the Diocese and should I return they would initiate action through various professional bodies to force me to resign.

"He threatened me by saying that should I return as Bishop, I would be subjecting the Diocese to `public scandal' as accusations would be made against the way I carry out my ministry as Bishop.

"It would be better for the Diocese that I not return."

In the letter Bishop Hough called the threat an "outrageous" action against the Diocese.

"I have since written a letter to the priest and his alleged group of supporters inviting them to put their concerns in writing and to arrange to meet with me on my return," Bishop Hough wrote.

"I would be happy to address, in an appropriate and professional manner, any issues they may have."

Bishop Hough said the Vicar General had been informed of the priest's allegations and was also willing to engage in any subsequent discussions.

Will the last remaining Ballarat Anglican please turn out the lights? I'm glad that at last the Anglican clergy of Ballarat have stood united to try and improve the climate of faith in this diocese. Since Michael Hough became bishop the morale of the clergy and the parishioners in Ballarat has fallen considerably. This is apparent from the huge turn-over of clergy, the diminishing numbers of people regularly worshipping and the general opinion of those few who still remain active in the church. I only hope that he now realises that he can no longer effectively lead a I hope this saga does not drag on and that Michael Hough has the good grace to step aside and bow to the will of the remaining Ballarat Anglicans.

Actually, the light went out when Bishop Hazlewood retired.

I couldn't agree more with the below post. Michael Hough has scared away too many of the previously active Anglicans in the Ballarat diocese. If you ask me, he wasn't 'threatened' by the clergy - he was finally given some advice on how to save the diocese. Take heed, Michael Hough!

Thank you Catherine for you comments. I couldn't agree more. It is truly a sad state of affairs within the Diocese made more pitiful by Archdeacon Yeats, as Vicar General, making the concerns so public. Perhaps it is time we all dusted off our Barchester Chronicles to see where we should go from here!

Why would the Vicar General make the concerns so public? Most Anglicans already know how bad things have been since Hough became Bishop - why let everyone else know? Does Yeats really think this will attract people to the diocese? How absolutely crazy - still, not surprising given some of the absurd decisions that have already been made by the current leadership. I hope Hough takes the advice of the clergy and clears off.

Well, who, in Ballarat, did Rev Hough upset ? Here, my thoughts go back to the days of Frank Moyle, who successflly did his utmost to ensure that Bishop, Priests, and laity, were in accord. Those in Creswick will remember him as a dedicted pastor who cleaned up a demoralised parish, and was obviously destined for greater things. Michael, for the interested, must rate as a true preacher who does not rely on notes, whether written previously or down-loaded from the 'Net. Has Michael upset the Empire Builders or the Blue Rinse Set, if not both ?

Who DIDN'T Hough upset? I hope he doesn't return - perhaps then the Anglican church can start to rebuild itself.

Hiding behind the authority of the Episcopate to justify poor management is unacceptable in this day and age. Its time the Archbishop intervened for the sake of the clergy and people of the diocese and encouraged Michael Hough to move on.

What a joke. Imagine a group of clergy and parishioners being disgruntled with the Bishop of the day? Perspective people! In true Anglican form never gather together as one body, but instead tear ourselves apart from within, whilst those without nod and smile. What concerns me more is that a priest (or priests) willingly disregards his oaths of obedience that he takes at his induction (and ordination). I suspect these 'defenders of the faith' are more likely ready to collect a pension and have nothing to lose, so in one last great 'hoorah' have decided to go out with a bang and drag a lot of gullible people with them. So much for the clerical 'healing hand'. Amusingly, I also wonder how many priests will soon receive similar requests from long suffering parishioners who say 'enough is enough': I'm tired of your long winded meandering sermons; the fact you've never visited me in 10 years; that you're an egotistical empire builder; that you can't remember my children's names; please when you go on holidays don't come back. I mean after all, if oyu lead by example, what's good for the goose ...

Unbelievable…as a relatively new member of the Anglican Church in Ballarat, I have to confess that I am not surprised by the negative comments posted about Bishop Hough and Archdeacon Yeats and the way they go about their ministries. How dare they suggest that the clergy and laity get out of their comfort zones and engage with the community at large! How dare they insist on renewal and demand that we (all Christians) take responsibility for and care for the disengaged and marginalised within our communities. That would require an effort from both the clergy and laity! We would need to make sacrifices within our everyday lives and actually speak to people with passing judgment! We would need to practice our faith outside of the church walls! Our clergy and laity would need to work at actively spreading the word of God to those marginalised and the unchurched. I even hear that they wants us all to be welcoming of new comers and to cater for different styles of worship, even for the youth. They can’t have opened their eyes when they visited the various parishes around Ballarat. What youth fathers? Very few teenagers or young families attend to our churches! Then there was that ridiculous ride and walk around the dioceses, meeting with the people, engaging with communities and raising the profile of the Anglican Church. But the Bishop’s outrageous behaviour does not stop there. He is actually a volunteer with the CFA and he and Benita foster babies at short notice. A good Bishop should only be seen in his office and in church on Sundays maintaining the Status-Quo! How dare he lead by example?
