Puppies dumped and left to die

WHO would abandon these puppies?

These four, very cute, six-week-old Jack Russell cross pups were found dumped in a box at Sebastopol's HR Power Park on Monday night.

Luckily, they were taken to Ballarat Family Pet Care Clinic, where staff members spent time with them yesterday before they were taken to the RSPCA.

There is nothing known about the background of the three males and one female, except they are healthy, active pups.

The RSPCA will look after them for eight days, and if no owner claims them, they will be put up for adoption.

Ballarat Family Pet Care Clinic vet Dr Holly Cathels said it was important people realised there were places people could take their unwanted animals where they could be given a loving home.

"Leaving them in a box in a park is completely inappropriate," Dr Cathels said.

"Any vet and the RSCPA are entirely happy to help people with pups."

But, she said people were sometimes embarrassed at leaving their unwanted animals, with the financial burden often being a main reason.

"Puppies need to be vaccinated, wormed and desexed, " she said.

"These puppies may also have been a result of an unplanned mating, but there are places where they can go and be looked after."

Practice manager Lyn Dyer said her staff had already wanted to adopt the cute puppies .

She said they had a fabulous temperament, and were "real goers", which would suit an energetic household.

"These pups have loved all the attention they've received, and are very socialised," Mrs Dyer said.

"As sweet and healthy as they are, these pups will go to a good home and be very looked after."

There are so many unwanted pets being "put to sleep" or dumped. How can we call ourselves pet lovers while this carnage goes on? Until dogs are cats are desexed, by law, backyard breeding and puppy farms will continue to churn out "cute" puppies to make profits. They are just thrown away like wrapping paper!

I can't think why we would go and breed another single dog until every shelter is empty. What a sad race we have become.

The RSPCA acknowledges financial burden as a problem for leaving these puppies abandoned yet it would have cost over $100 each to take them to the RSPCA - possibly the primary reason why they were abandoned. Maybe this needs to be reviewed.

If you are are going to post a comment , please have your facts correct . The RSPCA surrender fees are $15 per puppy up to a max of $65 . These fees go to providing the service at RSPCA shelters . And in most cases the RSPCA would recieve little if any money towards the care of surrendered animals . If you breed the animal why shouldn't you be responsible for their ongoing care or provide some sort of money towards the RSPCA for there care towards that Animal . If you think that surrender fees at RSPCA Shelters some how give the right to dump animals !! Your kidding ? What the RSPCA is expected to run on fresh air !!

3:26 PM AEDT | THE real stars of the Great Victorian Bike Ride are the old folks, the people aged 70-plus. The ride is full of them, nuggetty men and women quietly peddling into the wind and occasional rain, ploughing slowly up hills, seemingly unstoppable, giving hope to us all.
