Award caps big night for Ross

18/08/2008 1:32:00 AM
NATTE-BEALIBA midfielder Stephen Ross is the 2008 Lexton Plains Football League's Peter Smith Medallist.

Ross last night won the senior best and fairest award with 24 votes.

It capped off a fantastic night for the midfielder after he won The Courier Player of the Year and received an honorary award for representing the Vic Country side at the National Championships with Rokewood-Corindhap's Tom Blackford.

"I was just lucky to win a few awards," he said.

"I never expected to get that many votes. I didn't play that well during the middle of the year.

"It's a team game. I'd much prefer to be playing in the finals like last year."

Carngham-Linton ruckman Matt Stasse finished just three votes adrift, but was ineligible for the award after being suspended early in the season.

Skipton's Kiernan Molloy received 18 votes.

"I've met a heap of new blokes (from the VCFL side) and they were all good fellers," Ross said.

"The standard was good and I really enjoyed it."

The 23-year-old Ross polled in 11 matches and was judged best on the ground four times. He also received five two-votes and two single votes.

He secured votes in the opening seven rounds to rush to 15.

At that stage though it shaped as a close count, with Carngham-Linton's Robbie Greenbank, Tom Blackford match-winner Tom Blackford and Eamon Johnson from Lexton not far away on 11.

Ross ultimately clinched the medal with a round 16 best-on-ground.

"I'm just enjoying playing footy with all my mates," he said.

"All my family is at Natte and I love playing footy with my brothers and have my sisters playing netball out there too."

The reserves best and fairest went to Rokewood-Corindhap's Troy Richardson while success was also claimed by Rokewood-Corindhap in the goalkicking awards.

Playing coach James McNamee won the seniors with 77 goals for the home and away season while Darren Grenfell's 45 goals in the reserves was enough to secure him the award.

Carngham-Linton won the champion club award, 18 votes ahead of Ararat while Natte-Bealiba's Alan and Debbie Weir were awarded administrators of the year.

3:26 PM AEDT | THE real stars of the Great Victorian Bike Ride are the old folks, the people aged 70-plus. The ride is full of them, nuggetty men and women quietly peddling into the wind and occasional rain, ploughing slowly up hills, seemingly unstoppable, giving hope to us all.
