Check before decision on AUSTAR Arena

20/08/2008 12:33:00 AM
AFL VICTORIA will wait until after a ground inspection late next week before deciding whether North Ballarat hosts a Victorian Football qualifying final at AUSTAR Arena.

AFL Victorian football operations manager John Hooker is planning to visit Ballarat before making a determination.

North Ballarat Football Club chief executive officer Mark Patterson remains confident the Selkirk Roosters will get a home final on either September 6 or 7 as long as they finish in the top two.

To be sure of a top-two finish, North Ballarat most likely needs to defeat Tasmania and Sandringham in the remaining home and away rounds. Each will be played away.

North Ballarat is second on the ladder, locked in a three-way battle for first and second.

Top team Williamstown and Port Melbourne are on the same premiership points.

Mr Patterson said the ground's playing surface had improved markedly since Saturday, when the Roosters lost to Northern Bullants in heavy conditions.

He said North Ballarat was working closely with Ballarat City Council to ensure the AUSTAR Arena playing surface was in the best possible condition.

* MEANWHILE, North Ballarat reports a clean bill of health in the lead up to its encounter with bottom team Tasmania in Hobart on Saturday.

This is expected to be the last time the Roosters and Devils meet, with AFL Tasmania certain to end its association with the VFL.

Tasmania is setting up a new statewide competition and wants to put its resources into making this work.

3:26 PM AEDT | THE real stars of the Great Victorian Bike Ride are the old folks, the people aged 70-plus. The ride is full of them, nuggetty men and women quietly peddling into the wind and occasional rain, ploughing slowly up hills, seemingly unstoppable, giving hope to us all.
