Pride plots its ambush tactics

20/08/2008 12:43:00 AM
WAYS to iron out the finer points of launching a tactical ambush were plotted deep within the Ballarat Pride camp this week.

It is one week to finals in Netball Victoria state league division one.

Pride has drawn a clash tonight with VU Western Lightning, which despite falling well clear of the play-offs, has plenty left to prove.

Lightning is young, fast and highly unpredictable _ a dangerous mix.

Redemption is high on Lightning's agenda after a stinging 27-goal loss to Monash University Central last week and a 13-goal trouncing from Pride in round eight.

A loss for Pride, could mean sacrificing a top-two spot and double chance in finals.

Ballarat co-coach Jo Dash said her team must be ready to combat anything.

"We want to drive home the home and away season with a strong finish, but so will they _ and they will want a big scalp," Dash said.

"We have a strong trademark defence but we're trying to be less predictable and that's something Lucille (co-coach James) has been working on.

"We have lots of options and players, who are confident in lots of combinations.

"It all comes down to the old processes and the outcome takes care of itself."

Pride survived a "gut-wrenching" one-goal thriller against Ariels last week after a shaky fortnight at the State Netball and Hockey Centre, Melbourne.

Dash said it was a match Pride needed.

This was the first tight encounter Pride had survived all season and now they have done it, experienced it, and won it, Pride players will draw on it for finals.

Pride has a gruelling physical training session this week, with high player input, to ensure tactics will be clear and can swing into action in a split second.

A full squad has been named, which highlights Pride's preparedness.

Pride's game plan is simple _ take control early _ but last week emphasised the importance of back-up plans, and lots of them, just in case.

2/12/2008 | SO it happened today. I entered the grumpy zone. About an hour out of Mortlake as the wind lifted, I began to feel decidedly bad tempered. And here’s why.
